Q: What do kids do at a Mad Science birthday party?

A: During the first 40-45 minutes, the Mad Scientist will engage children with amazing science demonstrations that are conducted with the help of your birthday child and guests. Some examples of experiments that may be included are: fitting a hardboiled egg into an impossibly small space, seeing flash paper disappear and creating bubbling potions with dry ice. During the final 10-15 minutes of the party, the kids will make slime, silly putty or a superball to take home. Adding on a rocket launch or cotton candy will add 10-15 minutes to the length of your party.

Q: How far in advance do I need to book my party?

A: Our party schedule fills up quickly. We suggest you book well in advance to get the date and time you want. Generally, at least 2 weeks in advance is recommended.

Q: What do I need to do to make a reservation?

A: You can fill out an online request form by clicking on the “Book now” button. We will respond to your request as soon as possible. You can also call us at (866)573-4052 and we’ll be happy to schedule your party over the phone!

Q: What time can I have my party?

A: Parties are typically hosted Saturdays/Sundays at 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. During our Winter Season, (October 1 - March 31) parties are hosted at 11:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 4:30 p.m.  Parties can also be scheduled Monday-Friday at any time!**

All dates and times are subject to availability.

Q: Do I need to know the exact number of kids attending my party to book it?

A: No. All we need is an estimate of the number of children you expect to attend. We ask that you plan for the largest number of children expected. On the day of the party, you will be charged based the number of kids that actually attend, except in the case of parties with 33 or more children.

Q: Do you have any themed parties?

A: All our themes revolve around science. If you have another party theme, we can notify the Mad Scientist, and he/she will do his/her best to incorporate your theme into the experiments and language that is used.

Q: When will the Mad Scientist arrive?

A: The Mad Scientist will arrive at least 15 minutes early to set up. He/she will be ready to start the show at the time you booked. It is best to start your party at least 30 minutes before your Mad Science show is scheduled to start, to ensure the Mad Scientist is able to start on time.

Q: What kind of space is needed?

A: The Mad Scientist will need a table to set up on. Folding tables are what we are looking for, but other tables can be used. We ask that you have enough space for the Mad Scientist and for your guests to be comfortable as well. The kids will be seated on the floor on a tarp provided by the Mad Scientist..

Q: How much space is needed for the rocket launch?

A: The Mad Scientist will need a medium to large sized back yard or open space to launch the rocket. If you are not sure whether you have sufficient space, you can always add the rocket launch and then the Mad Scientist will assess whether or not it is safe to launch the rocket on the day of the party. You will not be charged for the upgrade if the rocket cannot be launched safely.

Q: Will I have to provide the Mad Scientist with anything?

A: We will need access to water for set-up and clean-up and access to electricity for some of our parties, as well as for the cotton candy upgrade. Please let us know if your party location does not have either of these.

Q: Once I have scheduled my party, can I make changes to it later?

A: Any changes to your party must be scheduled at least three business days before your party.

Q: Is it okay to have other activities going on while the Mad Scientist is performing?

A: The Mad Scientist will begin at the scheduled start time and continue until our portion of the entertainment is finished. We will not be able to stop for any other activities (ex. food or cake). Please plan accordingly.

Q: What if it rains the day of my party?

A: If it rains on the day of your outdoor party, the Mad Scientist will call to see if there is an alternate indoor location to conduct the party. If the party is indoor with a Rocket Launch add-on and it is raining, children will make UV reactive bracelets instead of launching the rocket.

Q: Can I have the phone number of my Mad Scientist?

A: We do not give out the Mad Scientist’s personal contact information. The Mad Scientist assigned to your party is given your contact information and will give you a call a day or two in advance to touch base with you.

Q: For what ages are your parties appropriate?

A: Our parties are appropriate for children between 5 to 12 years of age. Siblings 4 or younger generally watch, but do not actively participate in the party and should not make a take home project. We determine the number of attendees based on the number of children between the ages of 5 and 12.

Q: When do I pay?

A: At the end of your party, you will pay the Mad Scientist the remaining balance, plus for the amount of goody bags you purchase. You can pay with cash, check, or provide authorization to charge the credit card we have on file.

Q: What is your policy on tipping?

A. Please tip your Mad Scientist using cash or check, separate from the Birthday Party payment.

If you have any other questions, please call us at (866) 573-4052

Is this like a magic show?

NO! We want to show the kids the DIFFERENCE between magic and science. Sure, magic is fun - and, in fact, we start the show with a magic trick - but with science there are no secrets! We as Mad Scientists get to tell everyone how everything works!! We'll do lots of fun, visually interesting experiments, with plenty of opportunities for helpers (usually the birthday child)! Our inquiry-based presentation ensures that the show isn't a lecture. We want the kids to tell US what's going to happen. We pose problems and "what-ifs" and let THEM work out hypotheses that WE test out!

What kind of experiments do you do?

Here are a few examples of experiments the show might include:

  • Fit a hardboiled egg into an impossibly small space!
  • Create tornadoes in a tube!
  • "Melt" styrofoam!
  • Light a lightbulb without plugging it in!
  • See how a rainbow is made!
  • Create the world's smallest fireworks show!
  • See disappearing flash paper!
  • and many more!!

What do the kids get to do?

Kids love the opportunity to show off what they know or what they think will happen next. Unlike a magic show, we encourage the kids to tell us what they think is going to happen! In addition to the constant audience interaction, and the occasional helper during the show, all the kids will get to make something to take home.

What age levels are the birthday parties appropriate for?

Preschoolers through 6th graders tend to get the most out of our Birthday Parties, but younger or older kids will certainly have a blast. Younger kids will love what they see and older kids will love learning WHY things happen. The Mad Scientist will always tailor the party to the age group - giving older kids a bit more explanation than with a younger group.

What does my birthday child get (aside from the coolest party ever!)?

During the show, our Mad Scientists seem to call on birthday children for help a lot!  Go figure!  Plus, they'll get to do the very same take-home activity as everyone else.

After the show, the birthday child gets two more surprises - a complimentary Mad Science goodie bag and a large, full-color Mad Science poster that each guest can autograph!!

Is there really educational value?

Absolutely! While the kids may not themselves be aware that they are learning, the parents certainly are. Our birthday parties are based on the same teaching methods and materials used in our classroom programs, but with even more entertainment thrown in. Aside from the specific material covered, the kids will become very familiar with the concepts of observation, hypotheses, and experimentation.

Are these experiments safe?

You better believe it!! As much as we want kids to have fun, it's even more important to us that they be safe. Most of what we use are household items used in new and creative ways. Some experiments may use small flames but there are for the Mad Scientist only - which, of course, is made perfectly clear!

Could we do even more stuff if we wanted to?

Well.... OKAY!!  We have a variety of party packages to make your child's birthday party a huge success!!

What about goodie bags and stuff?

We offer fully-stocked Mad Science Goodie Bags, Invitations and Thank You Cards. Call for more information.

Yeah, yeah, so how much already?

Please call, email or complete a party request form and our office can provide you with pricing information for your child's party.

Pricing is based on several variables such as party package and the number of children attending.

Remember, Mad Science is confident in the quality of it's programming and we offer a 100% guarantee!

How much space do I need?

Enough for your guests to be comfortable as well as a small area in which the Mad Scientist can perform. The Mad Scientist works off of a table, which we ask you to provide (see next question). The show itself takes place in front of the table. The take-home activity is usually done on the floor (we bring a floor cover).

What does the Mad Scientist bring and what do I need to provide?

We bring all of the necessary materials.

All we ask from you is:

1. A table. Card table-size or larger is fine (though larger is better).

2. Access to electricity

3. Access to running water (This does not have to be in the same room)

4. If possible, a room or are which can be darkened somewhat (For some parties)

5. Lots of kids ready to have fun!!

How much preparation time does the Mad Scientist need?

The Mad Scientist will arrive at your home (or the party location) about 15-20 minutes before showtime. We recommend that the show time be scheduled at least 30 minutes after the official party start time. We don't want anyone to miss anything!!

How long is the show?

The show, including the take-home activity, typically lasts about 45-60 minutes depending slightly on the number of kids and party package. Click here for party packages available.

Is this going to make a big ol' mess or what?

Nope!! The Mad Scientist cleans up after themselves when they are done! You won't even know they've been there! (Except the kids will be much happier than they were before the show.) They Mad Scientist will have a table cover for the show table and a floor cover for the activity area. The Mad Scientist will pack up all of their materials and throw all their trash away.
