Elementary School Workshops

Mad Science is on a mission: By making science fun, we aim to inspire an interest in science and a love of learning in children that will last a lifetime.  

Our hands-on approach and focus teaches kids about the fun of science and helps to spark their imaginations! Mad Science’s in-class interactive workshops are aligned to STEM objectives, curriculum-correlated, and meet state and district requirements. Each workshop is accompanied by a Teacher Resource Package filled with pre & post workshop discussions and activities that maximize the learning experience before and after each Mad Science workshop. Workshops can be held as an "in-class field trip" or as an after school treat! With professional lesson plans, unique equipment, and animated instructors, Mad Science Workshops are an ideal way to reinforce core science concepts.

With over 70 different unique classes to choose from we are sure to have something that meets your needs. Acids and Bases

Uncover the secrets of chemistry and the effects that acids and bases have on our lives. Learn about the interaction of acids and bases while making a Mad Science “cannon”!

Agents Undercover 

Calling all agents, calling all agents! Get into gear with Agent Undercover and learn what it takes to be successful in the spy world. With the Undercover Observer that students make and take home, they will step into the shoes of a spy in action. The viewer allows them to observe visually- a key skill for agents undercover! 

 

Atmosphere & Beyond 

We're on a mission to explore the atmosphere on Earth, and beyond! Travel to the end of the rainbow and make a sunset! Mix up various planetary atmospheres, one molecule at a time! Discover how stars look in space and take home your own Meteorological Station.

Black and Blue Oceans

Environmental disasters are all too frequent in our modern world. This workshop explores two current pollution issues: oil spills and acid rain. Students devise and test oil spill techniques in a mock oil spill.

Body Basics

Explore the amazing machine that can speak 48,000 words, move liquids 168,000,000 miles, and take in 3 pounds of food all in one day- your body!

Bugs! 

Students will explore the world's most abundant animal! Insect defenses and their role in our ecosystems will be explored in fun, hands-on activities that introduce children to these fascinating creatures! Children will use their knowledge of insects to make their very own bug eye model to take home.

Chem-in-a-Flash 

Hop on the chemistry express for a high-speed science experience! Perform instantaneous experiments in this fast-paced class on reactions that go like mad! Pick up an Action Flask and perform some snappy chemistry experiments at home!

Che-mystery 

Eliminate the mystery in chemistry! Explore one of the most exciting and fundamental sciences as you watch sand float on top of water and experiment with your very own Dynamic Dish!

Current Events 

Take a tour on the electron freeway! Conductors, insulators, transistors, and other elements in the world of circuit electricity introduce themselves to you via the tingle in your fingertips and the twinkle in your eye.

Detective Science 

We'll transform the room into a crime lab to collect fingerprints and other clues. Learn how science is used to solve real crimes!

Dinosaurs 

Examine real fossil casts to see the differences in the teeth of herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs. Students will participate in a mini dinosaur excavation!

Discover Detection 

Step into the shoes of a detective—uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis. Students will create, collect, and analyze evidence and discover what skills are necessary as a crime scene lab technician. Whodunit? Students will find out by using their Fingerprint Finder to place and identify UV prints. 

Dry Ice

It's a solid...it's a liquid...it's a gas! Learn about the wonders of sublimation as you see up close how matter moves between it's three states. 

Dry Ice Capades 

Manipulate matter in all of its three states! Melt metal in boiling water and freeze water with just a breath of dry ice! Use your Thermocolor Cup to test the temperature of liquid matter in your home!

Earthworks

Take a voyage to the center of the Earth! We'll investigate the powerful processes that shape the planet and form remarkable rocks, magnificent minerals, and glittering gems! Children will take home sedimentary stackers that they made themselves.

Electricity

Excite some electrons and test various materials for conductivity with space-age plasma balls. Apply your new found skills and knowledge to create a static stick to take home.

Fantastic Fliers 

Learn the fundamentals of flight. Build your own stunt planes. You'll be a Top Gun before you know it!

Fun-damental Forces 

Gravity... Inertia... Centripetal force... who could ever imagine that an introduction to physics could be so much fun? We’ll experience these awesome forces for ourselves and build some cool devices to watch them at work!

Funky Forensics 

Figure out the science of forensics in this hands-on look at crime scenes. Evidence collection and puzzle making will lead them to understand why forensic scientists like to understand the complete picture before they make decisions. Students will use their Case Stamper take home to probe the science of tracking—they will stamp out a scenario on a case card according to a pre-determined story. 

Glow Show 

Discover amazing things that glow in the dark! Find out how fluorescence can be used to catch counterfeiters and how chemiluminescence can be used to make a light bulb in a bottle! (requires ability to darken room)

Harnessing Heat 

Learn the properties of heat. Witness an underwater volcano, experiment with thermometers and have a "Sand Blast!"

Harnessing the Wind 

Discover how wind can be harnessed to fly, power a mill or to break a skydiver’s fall. Build an instrument to measure the power of wind. 

Junior Detectives

Are detectives really scientists in disguise? Discover what it takes to be a detective in this hands-on look at detective science. Using powers of observations and the Inspecti-kit, our young scientists will have all they need to get started on their detective adventure. 

Junior Reactors 

Create a tiny world of atoms with your very own set of Atomic Coins! Learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for some sensational results!

Kitchen Chemistry 

Cook up a chemical reaction! Blow up a balloon with yeast. Go on a nutrient hunt. Get a glimpse of your guts-in-action with the Digestor Inspector kit.

Lab Works 

Enjoy this whirlwind class on how a lab works. Manipulate lab equipment and take home your very own Graduated Gear to continue your research!

Laser Lights

Learn about light, colors, holograms and special effects. Use a laser to create illusions and compete in a friendly game of Laser Limbo! 

Lights...Color...Action!

Living in Space (Grades K-6)

Mad Science Machines

Suspects, schematics, and sleuths... oh my! Connect the dots using science to help solve a crime in this hands-on investigation at the science of sleuthing. Students continue their sleuthing at home using their Scene Solver take home to reconstruct the scene of a crime with family and friends. 

Slime Time 

Ooze into a gooey hour of sliming around! Create slime using the Mad Science recipe, and then enter your creation in the Slime Olympics! Take home your own concoction of Mad Science Slime!

Slime! 

Slime is serious science! Explore the sticky, slippery polymer in depth as you make and play with your own slime and putty! Then, using the properties of polymers, watch some Magic Muffins Grow without the aid of an oven! 

Slippery Science 

Giant molecule chains called Polymers are vital to modern civilization, and to life itself. Learn what makes these maverick molecules so unique, and so very important. Explore, create, and play with a polymer you may already know...SLIME! 

Sonic Sounds 

Surf sonic waves in this “off beat” class. We will explore how sounds are created and transmitted. Discover sound, sound waves and the way household items can be used to create amazing movie effects.

Space...the Final Frontier 

These are the voyages off the USS Mad Science.  Our mission: to take an exciting look at planets, moons, comets, and stars, to imagine new life and new civilizations...to boldly go where no Mad Scientists has gone before! (Space Suits not required).  

Space Phenomenons

Probe the mysteries of meteors and bounce around satellite light in this phenomenal program on space events! See comets up close as one is formed before your eyes, and take home your very own Space Telescope!

Space Technology 

Discover technology designed for outer space! Steer a laser beam through a laser maze, find hidden mountains using the principles of radar technology and discover everyday objects originally designed for use in space! Take home a Lightning Launcher that will light up the sky. 

Space Travel 

Learn what it takes to be a true globetrotter! Race a balloon rocket and design your own car engine as you learn about thrust. See the principles of propulsion at work in a water bottle rocket launch, and build your very own Shuttle Copter to fly to the skies!

Spy Academy

Look out 007—the Mad Science Spy Academy is in session! From edible messages and decoding clues, students will have the opportunity to check out the skills that spies have in this hands-on journey into the world of espionage. Students will make and take home their own Secret Code Breaker to communicate stealthily at home, like real spies. 

Stunt Planes 

The Wright brothers would be proud as we follow in their footsteps and learn the fundamental principles of flight. Build a “football” glider, learn about control-surfaces and build your very own loop flying stunt plane. You’ll be a Top Gun after this class! 

Suns & Stars 

Watch stardust burn, and journey through a soapy galaxy as you investigate the life cycle of stars. Use your Bead Dipper to create a glow-in-the-dark constellation!

Stick it to the walls in this adhesive hour on things that cling! Build a bond with glue and get attached to Professor Beakerdude!

Super Structures 

Discover the hidden strength of triangles, arches and cylinders. Use combinations of shapes to build your own super-structure!

Tantalizing Taste 

Explore the chemistry behind your savory sense with this tantalizing class. Be ready to stick out your tongue as you discover the delicious biology behind your taste buds. You’ll be surprised to know what your nose knows.

Taste Buds 

Experiment with taste sensations while “mapping” out your tongue. Carbonate and taste your own soda pop and test your pallet with a Mad Science Taste Challenge!

Under Pressure 

Join Bernoulli and Newton as we take this exciting look at the science behind aerodynamics and the properties of air... under pressure. Use a vortex generator to create air pockets with a punch, and levitate ping-pong balls in defiance of gravity!

Wacky Waves 

Water covers more than 3/4 of planet earth, and no life on earth could survive without it. Future Mad Scientists will explore waves, tides, and water pollution in this wet and wild workshop. 

Walloping Weather

Discover how hurricanes, tornadoes and thunderstorms form and how powerful they can be. Make a UV ray detector!

Watts Up! 

Learn about electricity, its properties and its role in natural phenomena. Make indoor lightning while conducting hair-raising experiments with our plasma balls.

Where's the Air? 

Be amazed at the power of air around us. Use a vortex generator, watch an aluminum can implode, and make your own paper helicopter to take home.

Whodunit? 

Want to know who did it? Test your skills and learn how the pros do it through careful observation and techniques to handle evidence properly. Using their Whodunit Kit take home, students can practice the skills of recall and observation. They are provided with character descriptions to reconstruct the face of the suspect! Provided answer keys give them feedback on their skills.
